Embracing the joy of childlike wonder.

A cardboard box can be a spaceship. A puddle can be a whole world. There’s a creative habit worth keeping.

Stay curious. A young child sitting cross-legged and playing with colourful building blocks.

What if?

A cardboard box becomes a spaceship. A shadow becomes a creature. A walk to the shops turns into a very important expedition. Children can give ordinary things extraordinary possibilities.

That way of looking feels close to animation. We spend our time asking what something could become, how it might move and what would happen if the usual rules didn’t apply. You don’t need to be a child to enjoy those questions.

Look a little longer

Inspiration doesn’t always arrive as a big new idea. Sometimes it starts with noticing how a pigeon walks, how a coat catches the wind or how someone tries to hide a smile.

Next time you’re outside, pick one small movement and pay attention to it. What makes it distinctive? Is it quick and hesitant, slow and heavy, or surprisingly rhythmic? Those observations can give an invented character something that feels real.

Play without needing a result

Not every sketch needs to become a project. Make a strange shape. Give it a job. Draw how it behaves when it is late for work. There is value in following an idea before deciding whether it is useful.

Here’s a small exercise: take an everyday object and imagine three different personalities for it. A nervous kettle. An impatient kettle. A kettle that thinks it is an opera singer. The object stays the same; its timing, posture and sound tell a different story.

Ask the obvious question

Familiarity can make us stop asking why. Why does that character walk on two legs? Why is the moon in the sky? Why does a doorway have to lead to another room?

You don’t have to choose the strangest answer. Asking opens up alternatives. It can also reveal when a design choice is there out of habit rather than because it helps the idea.

Share what catches your eye

A funny drawing, a beautiful bit of packaging, an unexpected sound: showing someone what you noticed can lead to a conversation you wouldn’t otherwise have had.

When sharing another artist’s work, name them and link to the original. Say what caught your attention. Was it the colour, the movement, or the way a tiny detail changed the mood? Your response is often where the next idea begins.

Keep a little room for surprise

There’s no need to turn wonder into another task to tick off. Take a different route, try an unfamiliar material or let a sketch go somewhere you hadn’t planned.

At Move, that curiosity belongs alongside the brief and the craft. It gives us possibilities to explore; the job is then to find the ones that serve the story. Sometimes a box is just a box. Sometimes it is the beginning of a whole new world.
