A collaboration between Nintendo and LEGO has brought an augmented reality experience to market, delighting kids and adults everywhere. We were so excited to be asked to create an AR app to control real life, custom-built LEGO Mario courses.
With their LEGO Mario course, players can create their very own Super Mario levels, controlling what goes where. Just like in the original video game, they defeat enemies, overcome obstacles and collect coins as they help Mario move through each level. Then, it’s time to bring down Bowser!
We created a Web AR app that seamlessly connects to seven LEGO action bricks which trigger different reactions in LEGO Mario.
Players tap the screen to make LEGO Mario jump from block to block. When the course is rebuilt to create new levels to master, the app automatically updates alongside. Of course, the app needs to be accessible to all LEGO fans – so it works across all devices.
As we moved into the digital age, it looked like our most loved toys were going to be recategorised as ‘retro’. But by innovating with what they’re known best for, Nintendo and LEGO have remained at the forefront of the toy industry. We’re so glad to have been part of their success.
